intrathecal pump

Intrathecal pumps (or IT Pumps) are used to deliver medications directly to the spinal nerves and into the spinal fluid.
They allow for a smaller dose of medication to be given compared to the oral dose. This allows for the fewer medication side effects.

IT pumps are used for administration of narcotic pain medications in addition to baclofen for spasticity due to conditions such as stroke or multiple sclerosis. Prialt is a relatively newer medication used for chronic pain in IT pumps and is a non-narcotic.

Dr. Khan is one of the few neurosurgeons in the area who implants and manages IT Pumps.
